Undergraduate Certificate in Beekeeping
Whether you’re a hobbyist looking to expand your knowledge or preparing for a career in apiculture, UF’s Undergraduate Certificate in Beekeeping will give you the foundational skills needed to succeed in the field of honey bee management.
The program consists of 15 credit hours. After completing 9 credits of required courses, you’ll choose 6 credits of electives that align with your interests and career goals. Options may include courses in entomology, insect ecology, and pollinator conservation.
Online Labs
All coursework, including labs, can be completed entirely online. If a course requires insect collection, you may purchase a supply kit or build one at home using our instructions. Labs involving simulations use free online software — no travel required.
What You’ll Learn
The Undergraduate Certificate in Beekeeping provides a strong foundation in honey bee biology, colony management, and the role of apiculture in agriculture and the environment. Unlike the Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab’s Master Beekeeper Program, which is designed to mentor new beekeepers, this certificate offers formal academic training that can be applied toward professional or educational goals.
By the end of the program, you will be able to:
- Explain honey bee biology at both the individual and colony level.
- Identify honey bee predators and describe their biology.
- Develop strategies for managing honey bee pests and diseases.
- Compare and evaluate beekeeping practices for different goals.
- Communicate the importance of honey bees to agriculture, the environment, and the economy.
Before completing the program, students will take a final exam to demonstrate mastery of these learning outcomes. Upon graduation, official transcripts will state:
Undergraduate Certificate in Beekeeping.
