Dr. Rachel Mallinger
Associate Professor
Pollinator Ecology and Conservation
Dr. Mallinger is a pollination ecologist whose research focuses on plant-pollinator interactions, pollinator community dynamics, and the pollination biology of crop and wild plants. She and her lab members conduct research to better understand the pollination requirements of plants under different environmental conditions, the foraging behaviors of pollinators as they relate to floral traits, and the diversity of wild pollinator communities in response to land management. Research in the lab is conducted across a variety of ecosystems including agricultural, residential, and protected with the goal of enhancing both the conservation of pollinators and the pollination services that they provide. Research
Dr. Mallinger’s lab conducts research in three general areas, 1. Enhancing our understanding of basic bee biology including bee behavior, life history, and ecology, 2. Investigating the effects of disturbance and conservation on pollinator abundance and diversity, and 3. Examining interactions between bees and the plants that they pollinate. Extension
Dr. Mallinger’s extension program focuses on identifying management strategies that can support pollinators across different habitat types, and improve the pollination of pollinator-dependent crops. Her lab disseminates general information about pollinators, research results, and management recommendations to extension faculty, growers and other agricultural professionals, home gardeners, and landscape designers.
