Field Crickets, Gryllus spp.
(Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

Field crickets are distributed throughout the southern United States. Florida has six species with four being found in fields and other open areas. Field crickets are large, dark, and are usually found on the ground. Species look similar but the songs they produce may be used to separate them. Field crickets seldom cause problems in Florida but may cause harm by feeding on seedling plants. Insecticides are commonly used to manage populations when field crickets become a problem in vegetable crops.
