Definition:

Synonymy: The existence of more than one species name for one species. In the early years of the 20th century, a mole cricket species, Neoscapteriscus borellii (Giglio-Tos), was described from South America by a South American author named Giglio-Tos. A few years later a mole cricket species, Scapteriscus acletus, was described from the southern USA by North American authors (Rehn & Hebard). In the 1990s, reexamination of species seen by Giglio-Tos and by Rehn & Hebard, together with examination of many more similar specimens from South and North America, suggested convincingly to the North American taxonomist reviser that all the specimens belonged to only one species. Under the rules of the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature, the name Scapteriscus acletus must be replaced by the earlier name Neoscapteriscus borellii (Giglio-Tos). In the USA, the common name for this species is southern mole cricket, and its species name everywhere is Neoscapteriscus borellii (Giglio-Tos). It is a South American species which is an immigrant to the USA.
