Fernando Miguelena

Fernando Miguelena was born in Cancun, Mexico and was raised in Miami, Florida. He is currently attending the University of Florida working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Ecology & Conservation with a specialization in quantitative science. In 2021, he joined Dr. Oscar Liburd’s Small Fruits and Vegetables IPM Laboratory as an OPS worker, assisting graduate students with their ongoing projects. During his time in the Liburd laboratory he assisted PhD student James Brown with his olfactometer project, studying yeast baited Scentry traps on fruit flies (Drospholia Suzukii). He had the opportunity to lead several experiment trials and was responsible for culturing the studied yeast microbes. While working in the Liburd laboratory, he also worked as an OPS in Lindsey Reisinger’s Freshwater community ecology laboratory. In the near future, Fernando hopes to attend graduate school to complete a Master’s degree in ecology with an emphasis on how global change impacts marine systems.
