There are countless insect species in Florida. Most are harmless or beneficial, but some can be pests of plants, structures, pets, or people. Accurate identification is a critical first step before deciding what measures to take, or if any measures are needed. The costs of incorrect identification and/or inaction can be significant. The Insect ID Lab strives to provide species-level identification of submitted insect, mite, tick, spider, and millipede samples. Depending on the sample, we may be limited to less specific identification. Upon receipt, Insect ID Lab manager, Lyle Buss, will review and identify the submitted sample and respond with a diagnosis. Management recommendations for submitted organisms can be provided upon request. Located within the Entomology and Nematology Department on the University of Florida’s main campus, Lyle leverages the local diverse expertise to consult subject matter experts when needed.
The UF IFAS Insect ID Lab services are primarily intended for Florida residents. If you reside outside of Florida and would like to submit a sample, please contact the lab prior to sending it in. The UF Insect ID Lab serves as the entomology hub of the Southern Plant Diagnostic Network Regional Center (https://www.npdn.org/spdn) and the Florida Plant Diagnostic Network.
