Mediterranean katydid

Phaneroptera nana

distribution map for Phaneroptera nana
Dots show county records; shaded area shows likely general distribution.
(All dots, with links to their sources, are documented here.)

Unlike most SINA maps this map attempts to show every record rather than showing one dot for each county record. In the San Francisco Bay area, there is at least one dot in each county but in the counties at the eastern edge of its western distribution the dot is centered in the part of the county that is the eastmost record for that county and the shading is centered on that dot.

The southmost records for Mediterranean katydids are from four coastal counties (Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego). As with the Bay Area counties, the dots are positioned to exclude suggesting that the species can live in desert habitats. As shown by the SINA 2003 map, Los Angeles County extends far to the west of Los Angeles city. The dot for Los Angeles on this map is sufficient to include the Los Angeles populations.
