Extension responsibilities
Beekeeping Specialist. Write newsletters, circulars, fact
sheets, answer questions and conduct short courses on honey bees
and beekeeping. Specializing in bee and financial management activities.
Teaching responsibilities
- Teach ENY 4571 (Apiculture).Beginning course on beekeeping
techniques and honey bee activities.
- Teach ENY 3005 (Principles of Entomology). Beginning coursein
entomological concepts.
Accomplishments
- Over the last five years, I have published sixty issues of
the monthly newsletter APIS. This newsletter is available in print
and electronically on the internet. It can be found archived in
gopher sites and computer bulletin board systems. This new way
of providing extension information was featured in 51 Reasons:
How We Use the Internet and What it Says About the Information
Superhighway, Farnet, Inc. 1994.
- My activities adapting electronic information into my program
has been detailed in a paper in Bee Science and an opinion feature
in American Entomologist. In addition,
- I have published four circulars, three are available on CD-ROM
and thirty-two fact sheets providing information to Florida beekeepers.
- I have been the Secretary-Treasurer of the American Association
of Professional Apiculturists for the last seven years. In this
capacity, I write the Association's newsletter and publish its
membership directory.
- As part of my duties, I wrote and produced two video tapes
which are in constant use. One is dedicated to beekeepers (Detection
of Varroa mites). The other is oriented toward the general public(A
Glimpse of Florida Beekeeping).
- I have also been involved in helping beekeepers be better
financial managers. My software package, A Profitability Model
for a Mid-sized Beekeeping Operation pioneered in this field and
is still available through the Florida Cooperative Extension Service.
It has recently been incorporated into an updated model to be
released by Cornell University. In cooperation with Dr. Roger
Hoopingarner, Michigan State University, I published three separate
papers on economics of beekeeping in American Bee Journal and
a chapter in the 1992 edition of The Hive and the Honey Bee.
- As a writer for the beekeeping press, I have published numerous
articles for The Speedy Bee, including resumes of the majority
of the annual conventions of the American Beekeeping Federation.
I also wrote extensive resumes of World Apicultural Congress meetings
held in Acapulco, Budapest and Rio de Janeiro, as well as other
meetings in Mexico and the Caribbean. Finally, I am an occasional
columnist for Bee Culture. It is published under the rubric of
"Nectar on My Boots."
- As a teacher, I have brought electronic communications to
the classroom. Both classes are issued VAX accounts and use them
for communication with the instructor and around the world. I
recently began teaching ENY 3005, Principles of Entomology using
computer presentation technology.
Grants and Contracts($10,000 over the last five years)
I produced two video tapes from APHIS funding and received
a number of travel grants to help beekeepers in foreign countries
and give papers at international meetings. I also secured funding
for upgrading my apiculture class from the University's Office
of Instructional Resources (OIR).
