Entomology-Nematology Student Organization (ENSO)

The Entomology and Nematology Student Organization (ENSO), the department’s university-registered student organization, is concerned with all areas of student involvement in the department. ENSO offers students the opportunity to participate in community outreach programs, student social events, and departmental activities. Among their many activities, ENSO members (a) convey student concerns and opinions to faculty and administration, (b) sponsor the departmental seminar series, (c) organize social events, (d) keep members informed of special campus events, (e) assist incoming students with orientation to Gainesville and the university, and (f) conduct community outreach programs to schools, etc. All graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in our department are members automatically. The basis of ENSO is student interest and support—the commitment is to expand student-faculty interactions and to continually improve the academic experience. ENSO also publishes the monthly departmental newsletter, Entomology and Nematology News.

Florida Entomological Society

Professional biologists find it invaluable to belong to a selection of professional organizations. The Florida Entomological Society is a strong force in entomology in Florida, and its journal, the Florida Entomologist, has national and international distribution. At the society’s annual meetings, awards are given for the best student presentations in addition to scholarships and research grants. Travel grants to annual meetings also are available. The greatly reduced annual dues for student membership includes a subscription to the Florida Entomologist. Membership application forms are available from the entomology faculty.

Entomological Society of America

Membership in the Entomological Society of America (ESA) is recommended highly for all entomologists. Student membership dues include a subscription to the American Entomologist, one of the society’s several scientific journals, and the ESA newsletter. Subscriptions to additional journals can be ordered separately. Membership application forms are available from the entomology faculty.

Florida Nematology Forum

Students in nematology should attend the annual meetings of the Florida Nematology Forum (FNF) which are held in conjunction with the Soil and Crop Science Society of Florida (SCSSF). The meetings are held at various locations in Florida. The FNF has no dues and no publications, but plans a program and business meeting for each annual meeting. Nematology students who have completed a significant piece of research should participate in the Best Student Paper competition held during the annual meetings of the joint SCSSF/FNF. Monetary awards are given for the first three places.

Society of Nematologists

All nematology graduate students should become associate members of the Society of Nematologists (SON), a national organization. Students may apply for associate membership at a reduced rate. Membership forms are available from the nematology faculty. Membership includes a subscription to the society’s official publications, The Journal of Nematology; Annals of Applied Nematology, a Supplement to the Journal of Nematology; and Nematology Newsletter. The SON provides monetary awards for the first three places in the Best Student Paper Competition held annually. DowElanco, through SON, provides needs-based travel grants for a limited number of students to attend the SON annual meetings.
