1. Education
- B.S., University of California, Irvine (Biology), 1978
- M.S., University of California, Riverside (Entomology), 1981
- Ph. D., Texas AandM University (Entomology), 1986
2. Employment
- Assistant Professor (1989-present) University of Florida
- Research Entomologist, GS-12 (1988-1989), USDA, ARS, Riverside,
CA
- Research Entomologist, GS-11 (1986-1988), USDA, ARS, Riverside,
CA
- Teaching / Research Assistant (1981-86), Texas AandM University
3. Research Responsibilities
- Investigate spatial distribution, seasonal phenology, developmental
rates, and damage thresholds of pest and beneficial arthropods
on vegetables and associated crops grown on muck and sand soils.
- Evaluate biological, chemical and cultural control tactics,
and host plant resistance in cooperation with scientists of other
crop breeding and protection disciplines to develop integrated
pest management programs.
- Arthropods pests of pepper, eggplant, cabbage and related
crucifers, sweet corn, and lettuce are under study.
Extension Responsibilities
- Diagnose arthropod pest problems in vegetables and for local
homeowners; evaluate available control strategies; communicate
and demonstrate research findings to growers through field days,
newsletters, and other communiques; educate growers, students,
general public and other clientele about entomology and general
agriculture through seminars, workshops, field tours, and invited
talks.
4. Accomplishments
- Documented development of resistance in localized Liriomyza
trifolii populations to registered pesticides.
- Co-developed insecticide resistance management program for
L. trifolii in vegetables.
- Discovered two previously undocumented fungal pathogens of
Plutella xylostella in south Florida.
- Documented development of Bt-k resistance in local P. xylostella
populations.
- Identified wild and cultivated host plants of silverleaf whitefly
and thrips species attacking vegetables in Palm Beach and Martin
Counties. This information used by growers when planning weed management
and cultivation strategies.
