Research Interests
- Research concentrates on ecology of arthropod-borne viruses, using both
molecular biology to study virus population genetics and classic virological
techniques, to investigate patterns of disease transmission and maintenance.
Domestic research focus is on mosquito-transmitted viruses endemic to Florida
. International research focuses on the arboviral burden of disease
in Central Asia . Works with mosquito control, military, and public
health agencies on vector-borne disease issues.
Teaching Interests
- Teaching concentrates on epidemiology of infectious diseases,
with a particular emphasis on vector-borne disease. Is currently
developing a distance learning course in medical entomology.
Accomplishments
- Identified patterns in viral genetics that describe spatial and temporal
subtypes of eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus; additional results suggest
modulatory effect of viral genetics on transmission intensity (in prep.). Identified
a putative reservoir for Karshi virus (a tick-borne encephalitis strain)
in the soft tick Ornithodoros tartakovskyi.
