- Graduate Research Assistant (1976-79) U. of Kentucky
3. Research Responsibilities
- The primary job responsibility is to conduct research to develop
pest management strategies for fresh market vegetables (60%) and
woody landscape ornamentals (40%) in Florida.
- The vegetable entomology program is focused around insecticide
resistance management. The woody landscape ornamental program
involves biology and control of insect pests of commercially grown
trees and shrubs.
4. Accomplishments
- Documented cyromazine resistance and determined its mode of
inheritance in the dipterous leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii. This
information was instrumental in developing a strategy for managing
resistance in the leafminer in celery.
- Documented resistance to fenvalerate, methomyl, and Bacillus
thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki in the diamondback moth, Plutella
xylostella, in Florida. This information contributed to a change
in use of insecticides on cabbage in Florida which resulted in
lower and more manageable infestations.
- The magnolia root borer, Euzophora magnolialis, was discovered
to be causing extensive damage to commercially grown magnolia. Results
of biological studies of the magnolia root borer contributed to
the development of a management strategy for this insect.
