Objectives and Goals: To provide training for undergraduate entomology majors and to serve as an advanced course in entomology for related sciences. The course is designed to cover the host and arthropod interaction along with identification, control, and the medical-veterinary aspects of entomology.

Prerequisites: None

Textbook: R.F. Harwood and M.T. James. 1979. Entomology in Human and Animal Health. Macmillan Co., NY. Reading assignments from books and journals for each topic will be supplied at the corresponding lecture. Most references are available in Room 3210.

Optional, of interest for pre-med and pre-vet majors: W. Peters and H.M. Gilles. 1995. Tropical Medicine and Parasitology.

Laboratory text: D.P. Furman and E.P. Catts. 1982. Manual of Medical Entomology. Fourth edition. Cambridge University Press. 207 pp.

Assignments and Methods by which the Student will be Evaluated and Grades Determined: Collection required, see printed syllabus for complete instructions for this requirement. There will also be several field trips, which will be arranged at a later date.

Grading: The course is based on 400 total points: midterm = 100; announced quizzes = 50; collection = 50; laboratory exam = 50; final exam = 150. Class attendance is known to improve test scores. Laboratory grading: Collection = 50 points; laboratory final exam = 50 points; announced quizzes = 50 points.

Grading scale:
A = 90-100%
B+ = 88-89%
B = 80-87%
C+ = 78-79%
C = 70-77%
D = 60-69%
E = <60%

Critical Dates for Exams or Other Work: Please see the printed syllabus for scheduled dates of exams. Students will be expected to sign the following statement on all exams: "On my honor I pledge that I have neither given nor received assistance in the completion of this test."

Policy Related to Class Attendance: Students are expected, but not required, to attend all class sessions.

Policy Related to Make-Up Exams or Other Work: Make-up exams will be allowed only in the event of an emergency (such as a death in the family) or personal illness. Such emergency or illness must be documented. The student must inform instructor ahead of time that he/she will miss an exam.

Class Demeanor Expected by Instructor: Please be considerate of your classmates by not chatting during lecture. The banging of doors is very distracting to both students and professor, therefore please arrive on time and do not leave early. Turn off cell phones and beepers before coming into classroom. UF rules prohibit your having food or drinks in classrooms. Use of tobacco products (in any form) in the classroom is prohibited.
