In or around streams, ponds, lakes: Look for mayflies, dragonflies, damselflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, aquatic beetles, true bugs, and flies.

Pond weeds are a perfect hiding place for insects, so you really want to use your aquatic net to search there. Just sweep the net from side to side through that area and dump the contents of your net into a pan.
