Course Description, Objectives and Goals

Course Description: Introduction to basic computing skills.Topics covered include directory structure and file managment practices, document formatting, filenames and formats, web page creation and advanced HTML techniques, word processing, and brief introduction to spreadsheets.

Objectives and Goals: To make the student a more proficient computer user through a series of lessons and exercises that require computer use.By the end of the semester a student should be able to properly name and save files, format a word processing document with page numbers, table, inserted graphic, headers and footers, and dot leaders. In addition, a student will be able to create properly formatted HTML web pages for uploading to the Internet. Lastly, the student will be given a brief introduction to the entering of formulas into spreadsheets.

Prerequisites:

You must have a Gatorlink account to participate in this class. This is NOT a Web CT class! While you may have other email providers, your class submissions and postings will be sent to your Gator link account only, and will not be forwarded to any other account (e.g. AOL, Yahoo, Gmail), so do NOT rely on other email to receive notices about this class!!!!

See University of Florida computer requirements. No prior computer skills or experience are necessary. Each student must have an active E-mail account with reliable Internet access. People that use Macintosh computers may also take this course, with the recognition that there are certain tasks that may not be appropriate for their operating systems. When/if this happens, arrangements are made to allow for changes in lesson submissions.

Textbook: None required

Software - Full featured Word Processing application (MS-Word or Corel WordPerfect), spreadsheet application (MS-Excel strongly recommended)

Assignments and Methods by which the Student will be Evaluated and Grades Determined

Grading:

Assignments are due no later than their designated date and time. NO assignment will be accepted late and missed submissions will be assessed a grade of 0 (zero) (no exceptions!).

Graduate students may have additional assignments. The final grade will be assigned as: 90=A; 80.0-89.9=B; 70.0-79.9=C; 60.0-69.9=D; <60=E.

Copyrighted Materials and Software Use: All students are required and expected to obey the laws and legal agreements governing copyrighted material and software use. Failure to do so can lead to monetary damages and/or criminal penalties for the individual violator. Because such violations are also against University policies and rules, disciplinary action will be taken as appropriate.

Policy Related to Class Attendance - This course is entirely online. No attendance policy statement is required.

Policy Related to Make-Up Exams or Other Work- Exams and exercises are delivered on a continuing basis. Late assignments will receive no credit unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor. All deferred work must be completed by the date of the last scheduled day of classes.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities - Students requesting special accommodations must first register with the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students will provide documentation to the student who must then provide this documentation to the Instructor when requesting accommodation.

Critical Dates for Exams or Other Work - This course is set up with weekly quizzes/exercises for the student to demonstrate mastery of the subject matter. Two exams approximately 5 weeks and 10 weeks into the semester may be given online. Unless otherwise indicated weekly exercises are due by the end of the week they are posted. All quizzes and exams are administered online.

Class Demeanor Expected by Instructor - This class has a list-se rv (ALS3203-l) that is used to post questions, class announcements, and hopefully responses to questions asked by your classmates. Any notice that is posted will be received by everyone on the class list-se rv. Offensive or otherwise inappropriate materials (as judged by the instructor) may result in a student being dropped from the class roster.
