University of Florida
Entomology and Nematology Department
Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Entomology and Nematology deals with insects and related organisms and offers an 18 hour major in one of six degree tracks. We are a biological science and thus demand all the science expertise of any other biological science. However, chemistry, mathematics, biology, physics and social science requirements differ markedly depending upon which degree track you may pursue. Some specializations demand internships while others do not. Our faculty expertise includes such areas as systematics, ecology, medically important insects, social insects, insect management, physiology, behavior, evolution and insects in natural ecosystems.
The Entomology and Nematology Department is within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). CALS has three graduation requirements that all students pursuing any major within the college must complete: (1) a speech course, (2) an economics course and (3) an advanced writing course. There are multiple course choices for each of these three requirements.
Students should carefully consider what type career they desire and select the degree track that most closely prepares them for that type career. Remember, however, that most undergraduate degrees do not lock you into a specific career. Graduate or Professional School degrees accomplish that task.
Entomology and Nematology also offers a 15 hour minor that can be tailored to the individual career interests of students. Many anthropology majors desiring to work in forensics obtain the entomology minor. Many animal biology students pursue the entomology minor because insects play such an important role in transmission of animal diseases. If you wish to pursue our minor, please contact our undergraduate coordinator for a conversation on how to tailor this program to your needs.
You can view the graduation requirements, a semester-by-semester degree plan, the criteria against which you will be tracked and all course options for any given requirement by accessing ISIS (http://www.isis.ufl.edu), logging in using your Gatorlink ID and password, and using the degree shopping feature. Scroll down to Entomology and Nematology and select any of the individual degree tracks in which you are interested. Any AP, IB, CLEP or Dual Enrollment credits you received before attending UF will appear automatically – provided your transcripts have already arrived at UF’s admissions office. If you see any discrepancies between credits you should have received and credits posted on the degree track you accessed, please contact UF’s Registrar’s office immediately.
Course requirements for any of our degree tracks also can be accessed in the on-line undergraduate catalog (http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog.html)or the “Guide to Majors” provided to you at Preview.
Entomology and nematology are biological sciences dealing with insects, mites, ticks, spiders, and nematodes. The Department of Entomology and Nematology offers a major in entomology and nematology and offers six (6) specialized degree tracks: Pre-professional, Basic Science, Ecotourism, Urban Pest Control, Biosecurity, and Plant Protection. Entomology and Nematology has a long tradition of sending students to Medical, Veterinary and Dental School, as well as to Graduate School and Employment.
