The word alphabet is formed from the first two letters (alpha and beta) of the Greek alphabet. Greek letters are used in mathematical notations and to some extent elsewhere. The basic Cyrillic alphabet is similar to the Greek. It is used in Russian; some other variant letters occur in other slavic (Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, Ukranian) and non-slavic (Azerbaijani, Chechen, Kazakh, Kirgiz, Ossetian, Tadzhik, Tatar, Turkmen, Uzbek, etc.) languages using this alphabet.
